We’re not going to pretend this one’s some hidden secret — Biore’s UV Aqua Rich has already found fans outside Japan. But we still get asked about it enough that it’s worth saying plainly: yes, it’s genuinely that good, and yes, you should probably own a bottle.

Why this formula, and a labeling note

Japanese sunscreen manufacturers have become well known for developing lightweight, cosmetically elegant formulas — ones that feel more like a light essence than a protective layer. Aqua Rich is Biore’s flagship expression of that: watery, fast-absorbing, and formulated with moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and royal jelly extract, so it provides a light moisturizing feel while protecting against UV rays.

One thing worth knowing: some Amazon listings for this exact formula don’t show the Biore name prominently in the title, just “UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence.” It’s still Biore’s product, made by Kao — just listed a little differently depending on the seller.

What it’s actually like

It comes out almost like a serum, not a lotion, and quickly absorbs. There’s a brief dampness right after application and then nothing — no film, virtually no white cast, and very little noticeable sunscreen scent.

I spent years avoiding daily sunscreen because everything I tried felt heavy or left a grey tint. This was the first one I didn’t mind putting on every single morning, makeup or no makeup. The 70g size disappears faster than you’d expect once you’re using it on your neck and arms too, not just your face.

Pros

  • Absorbs quickly, not much waiting around before makeup
  • Virtually no white cast, even reapplied heavily
  • Light enough to use on the whole body, not just the face

Cons

  • Chemical formula, so it's not an option if you specifically need mineral sunscreen
  • Like all sunscreens, it should be reapplied according to the directions, especially after sweating, swimming, or extended outdoor exposure

How I actually use it

A generous, even layer, reapplied every couple of hours if I’m actually outside rather than in and out of the house. It works fine as the last step before makeup — give it a minute to fully sink in first so it doesn’t pill under foundation.

Who this is for

  • Anyone who’s given up on daily sunscreen because of white cast or heaviness: this is the one to try before giving up entirely.
  • Makeup wearers: absorbs fast enough to layer under foundation without pilling.
  • Not for: if you specifically need a mineral (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) sunscreen, this chemical formula isn’t a substitute.
